Our 4 Year Journey to Stabilization We are Proud of...

Video Plates & Backings has worked tirelessly since 2016 to offer the highest standard of driving footage for film and VFX. We have recently engineered a new driving plate rig that allows for 9 cameras to be gyro-stabilized simultaneously. One of the challenges to shooting driving plates has always been bumps in the road. Camera technology has done a lot to lessen this and we are able to get great results with our optically and mechanically stabilized rig. Our white whale has been a few specific types of bumps and rough road conditions commonly found in large cities and on heavily worn streets. With the advances of our updated driving plate rig we have been able to effectively remove these sorts of bumps from the equation. For our test we used Congress Avenue in Austin, TX.  It is one of these well worn city streets complete with bumps, pot holes, and tons of cracked pavement. The type of road conditions that have been the bane of our existence for the past 4 years. When you watch the presentation above take note of the high frequency vibrations caused by the cracked pavement. You will see it in the optical stabilization test but not in the gyro-stabilized test! Additionally, dips in the road and potholes are completely smoothed out. These would have cause unavoidable jarring motion in the past. There are still greater lengths we would like to go to on our road to 9-camera perfectly stabilized driving footage. For now though we are proud to bring you our new and improved gyro-stabilized 9-camera rig.
